Following a spate of accidents near the Haji Ali stretch, the Mumbai Traffic Police have got the signal near the Saudamini Building functional again. Senior officers said technicians were hired to work on it recently and it has been repaired. The move, said officers, will ensure that drivers do not speed on the stretch. Traffic constables will be posted along the stretch with orders to stop and fine speeding motorists, they said.

“Due to some road work, the signal wires had got damaged and it had not been working for a while. Technicians were called to repair the defunct signal,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Nandkumar Chougule.

“Constables will be posted on the stretch in two shifts — from 8 am to 3 pm and from 3 pm to 11 pm. We have told our personnel to ensure they fine every motorist who flouts the rules, including jumping the signal,” said Chougule.

Nearby residents had demanded a speed breaker on the stretch after 16-year-old Shilajeet Yadav lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on Sunday. The driver of the car,Sumit Hirawat (32) who resides in Malabar Hill, was later arrested and let out on bail.

Officers, however, said the demand to construct a speed breaker is not feasible. “We cannot have a signal and speed breaker on the same stretch. And now since the signal has been repaired,we cannot have a speed breaker. However,if we feel the need for one later,it will be constructed,” added Chougule.
