The city traffic department has come up with a few solutions to check road mishaps at the Sola Bridge following a spate of accidents in the area. The department was supposed to conduct a survey of the area, which is opposite the Gujarat High Court on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, to analyse the causes of accidents.
Deputy Commissioner of Police M M Anarwala told Newsline on Thursday: “We have introduced some changes on the road. The height of iron grills on both sides of the bridge has been increased. Earlier, people used to jump over the grills to cross the road, thereby obstructing the drivers. Cars on this road generally run very fast, which leads to accidents in most cases. The road cannot have speed-breakers, as it’s a highway, but there are speed-breakers at the GHC gates.”
The Traffic department had earlier put speed-breakers outside the three gates of the HC, following an accident of the then chief justice.
As part of other measures, the Traffic department has removed speed-breakers from the by-lane going towards Science City. Anarwala added: “The speed-breakers used to obstruct traffic, as cars had to slow down suddenly that sometimes led to serious accidents. We have also put road signage specifying speed limits, which in no case can be 100 km/per hour like before. Constables have been deployed near the sign boards to ensure that the speed limit is adhered to.”
Earlier, the department had strictly acted against private jeeps and vans carrying passengers to Gandhinagar. It has now deployed policemen in all those places that had served as pick- up points.
