Beed explosion: Poultry farm owner arrested

The transistor radio that went off in the house of an MSRTC conductor injuring him and his three family members in Kaij taluka of Beed district was the handiwork of a plot hatched by a poultry farm owner to settle scores with another villager, a joint investigation by ATS and Beed police has revealed.

Poultry farm owner Munjaba Giri of Kendrewadi village in Ambajogai Taluka of Beed has been arrested in the case. He allegedly left the transistor radio in the bus hoping someone would report the unclaimed object and lead the investigators to his rival Gopinath Tarkase of the same village.

On November 30, Om Nimbalkar, a conductor with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on the Mumbai-Ambajogai bus found a packet with the radio and three cells. He took the packet home, put in the battery and switched it on. The radio exploded.

Maharashtra ATS chief Rakesh Maria told The Indian Express, "ATS and local police started a joint investigation. In Nimbalkar's house, ATS inspector Shiva Thakre found a small receipt that led to a cell phone shop in Ambajogai. The phone was bought in the name of one Gopinath Tarkase of Kendrewadi about three months ago. Takase told us he had not purchased the cell phone but mentioned about the dispute he had with Munjaba Giri about an year ago."

The duo had a rivalry over politics and land dealings and had filed several complaints against each other.

Maria said Tarkase had registered a complaint under the Atrocities Act and Munjaba was arrested. Days later Munjaba registered a complaint against Tarkase for allegedly molesting his wife.

"They have been nursing a grudge with each other. Their dispute is basically political and also about land dealings. Munjaba has also tried to trap Tarkase in cases of sandalwood theft and even narcotics but failed." Maria said.
