The politicians in Himachal are yet to adorn the khadi kurta synonymus with the elections. Thanks to the late onset of summers, the badgala coats, safari suits and even jeans have made space in their wadrobes. Even though the traditional kurta pyjamas are not of the scene but politicians across the parties have not made any consious effort to dorn the political attire. For Anurag Thakur, the popular candidate among the youth, branded jeans and shirts for the long hours of campaigning. His father and the Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal can be seen in bandgala coats and pants. Former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, his rival Maheshwar Singh and Virender Singh of the BJP too prefer the bandgala coats over the kurta pyjama. Pitched against Anurag, former BJP leader Narinder Thakur has consciously chosen khadi kurta and jacket for the campaign as instead of the suit and tie which he generally wears.
But the sitting MP from Shimla Col Dhani Ram Shandil (Retd) has not changed his suit and tie look, and can be seen wearing a matching scarf too.Chander Kumar of Congress and Rajan Sushant are the only ones constantly seen in white kurtas.
When a senior leader of the Congress was contacted, he said, “The dressing style of the public has changed , the politicians are following the trend.”
