  • The official said even helicopter pilot associations have been asking for dedicated corridors as they end up wasting a lot of fuel moving in various directions to avoid coming in an aircraft’s flight path.

At present, the Mumbai airport uses dedicated visual reference points to monitor chopper movements. These are essentially two reporting points located north and south of the airport.

error in reporting runway anglesBy: Rajkumar Pant | 15-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward The creation of separate corridors for helicopters is as welcome move, which was long overdue. This will reduce congestion over the skies at Mumbai and help increase the number of movements of helicopters from Juhu to Bombay High and back. This will also avoid chances of unsafe incidents like the recent air miss between President's helicopter and Jet Airways flight. Perhaps the entire exercise is driven by the pressure brought on from private helicopter operators, who have long been facing huge delays. However there is a factual error in reporting of the angles of the main runways at CSIA and Juhu airports. The angles are not 27 deg and 26 deg as reported. The confusion must have emanated from the designation of main runway at CSIA as 27/16. The number "27" stands for 270 degrees while measuring clockwise from North to the landing direction; similarly "16" means 160 degrees, and so on. The correspondent should have cross checked with some aviation experts/officials before reporting.
