Tribunal awards Rs 56 lakh to dead officer’s family

A motor accident claims tribunal here on Tuesday awarded Rs 56 lakh compensation to the family of an Eastern Coalfields Limited official, who was killed in a road accident in the district in 2009. In her order, Judge Banani Chakraborty asked the concerned insurance company to pay 6 per cent interest till the day the amount is given to the family of the deceased. On February 2, 2009, Pradip Kumar Sarkar, who was posted as materials manager in ECL office in Sanctoria, was on his way to Kolkata along with his wife and son when his vehicle had collided with a lorry. Sarkar had died in a Kolkata hospital on February 21.
