Coinciding with Rabindranath Tagore's 150th birth anniversary, a new Bengali section was today inaugurated at the American library here.

Noted writer Shankar inaugurated the Bengali section, which will offer Bengali translations of American classics as well as books about the US.

Responding to growing demand, the library has also refurbished its DVD section by adding more than 250 American titles to its existing collection of films.

"The Bengali book collection in the American library will break the language barrier and open up new vistas of opportunity, particularly for West Bengal, Tripura and the Barak valley in Assam, keen on knowing more about America," according to the American Centre deputy director Scott E. Hartmann.

This is the first time four titles in the popular 'Outline Series' published by the US department of state's bureau of international information programme, were translated into Bengali.
