Trinamool complains to EC over college bill

The Opposition Trinamool Congress today brought into the notice of the Election Commission an Assembly bill aimed at taking over an Ayurvedic college at Jagaddal in North 24 Parganas district, saying it violated the model code of conduct.

The bill was introduced in the Assembly on March 11 and placed today before the Standing Committee for discussion. It will be placed in the House on March 21 for clearance. "The way the bill was introduced and the speed with which it was getting passage smacks of chicanery on the part of the ruling Marxists. First of all the bill had financial implications. And taking over some unit or something is a policy decision and together amount to a gross violation of the model of conduct. So we have taken this issue up with the Election Commission,'' Partha Chatterjee, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said.

The state government will place a vote-on-account on March 21 and five bills will be tabled in the session that will go on till March 31.
