1,000 farmers with land documents to share special dais

Opposition Trinamool Congress has planned to mobilise over 1,00,000 villagers near HIDCO office on Thursday to protest against the “unlawful and forcible land acquisition” for setting up Newtown.

Besides, about a thousand dispossessed farmers will share dais. They will carry documents to expose how the government had taken away their land without proper compensation.

The four-hour demonstration was organised after party chief Mamata Banerjee took up the issue.

The government has claimed that most of the farmers who lost land for the township are happy with the compensation package. But last week,Housing minister Gautam Deb — apprehending a massive outburst on the issue — announced further compensation for farmers. Leader of Opposition Partho Chatterjee has said the minister has been trying to demoralise people by announcing further compensation and doles.

Deb,who is also the HIDCO chairman, meanwhile, will be skipping office during the Trinamool demonstration.

Deb said he has written a letter to Trinamool chairman Subrata Bakshi, asking if they have any plan to meet him. “As they have no plan,I do not see any reason to listen their speeches for five long hours,” said Deb. “So I will not be in office.”

Trinamool leader Jyotipriya Mullick, who is also in charge of organising the demonstration, said they have a list of 4,000 people who are discontented

“We want to sent the message to the government that their ploy to fizzle out our agitation against the forcible land acquisition in Rajarhat will not work,” said Mullick.

Prabir Kar,Trinamool president in Rajarhat, said they have conducted a survey which reveals that most farmers have not given their land willingly. “The farmers say that they were forced to give their land at gunpoint,” Kar alleged. “The ruling party had engaged musclemen for acquiring land. Their documents will prove how the state government has taken away farmers’ land at a minimum cost.
