Trinamool in fix over backing BJP, Left

The Trinamool Congress is in a fix over the issue of discussion on FDI in retail under Rule 184. After its call for a no-confidence motion against the government flopped, the party is unable to side with the demand for a discussion under Rule 184 since the move is backed by the BJP and Left.

While Mamata Banerjee's party does not want to be seen siding with the Left and BJP, TMC leaders said that in the event of a voting under 184, the party cannot abstain since that would help the government. "After the party's move for a no-confidence motion failed, we are not bothered about what rule the discussion takes place under. Hence, we say the Speaker should take a call. But this does not mean we have strengthened the government's hands," said a party leader.

Unable to influence the current political motion, the party is highlighting various "anti-people" decisions of the government. On Tuesday, party MP Saugata Roy explained why he resigned from the government. Besides FDI in retail, he mentioned the diesel price hike, cap on supply of subsidised LPG cylinders.
