Trinamool marches on,victors see Indira in didi

For Sikha Mitra, politics comes easy. Before getting married to former Congress leader Somen Mitra, she had watched her father Nripendra Chandra Choudhury taking part in the freedom movement from close quarters. Now,things may be different, but she says it prepared her for the politics.

“I have seen freedom fighters come to our home. In my college days,I had even participated in the Shiksha Bachao Andolan. In the last few years,I have seen this world closely due to my husband’s involvement in it,” said Mitra after she won the Sealdah Assembly bypolls on Friday.

Her victory, she said, has only confirmed people’s love for her husband and they voted for her as they felt a vacuum after Somen Mitra moved to Lok Sabha.

“He (Somen Mitra) has done so much work for the area and people knew me so well, which was the main reason for them voting for me,” she said. Mitra has already prepared a list of projects on which she would like to work.

“Lady Dufferin Hospital caters to pregnant women but is in a shameful state. I had recently gone there and was shocked by what I saw and I would like to do something for it,” Mitra said.

Before moving into active politics,Mitra has been involved with an NGO working for leprosy and TB-afflicted people. After the news of her victory was out,she first met Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

“The victory only reconfirmed what we have known for a while now — that people are voting for a change. Earlier, people felt if there is no Indira Gandhi there can be no Congress, and now the popular feeling is if there is no Mamata Banerjee there can be no Trinamool,” she said.

Mitra was happy to see her 24-year-old son Rohan Mitra in the city to share her joy. “He studied in London and is going to work there but he is here today and came with me to meet didi (Mamata).”

When asked if he was going to follow in his parents’ footsteps, she said,“Today’s children have a mind of their own and they will do what they want to. We cannot force him to join politics. He will join if he is interested. But yes,it would feel good if he were to follow our footsteps,” she said.
