Trinamool Congress supporters gheraoed the Chandernagore police station in Hooghly district on Thursday morning demanding action against alleged CPM-backed criminals for unleashing violence in the Urdi Bazar area in the last 24 hours.
The police said bombs and crude firearms were used in clashes between the two groups which spread to neighbouring Laldighi from Urdi Bazar. Trinamool leaders alleged that on Wednesday their party office in Urdi Bazar was vandalised by CPM men. “The CPM cadres came to take control over the area. They used crude bombs resulting in injuries to several of our supporters. One is in hospital. We went with a delegation and met the senior police officers,” local Trinamool leader Ram Chakraborty said.
Chandernagore Sub-Divisional Police Officer Amitava Maity, who returned from duty in Lalgarh on Wednesday, said: “We have registered cases against several anti-socials for attempt to murder and under the Explosive Substances Act. A TMC-led delegation had come to the Chandernagore police station. We are conducting raids in the area. No arrests have been made as yet.”
Police sources said trouble began after a teenaged couple from Urdi Bazar eloped last week. Although both returned home, their families were at loggerheads. The issue soon snowballed into clashes .
