The Shopian double rape and murder case, caught in a swirl of questions and controversies, may soon see a “conclusive finding,” suggested T D Dogra, head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, just back from the exhumation of the two bodies.
Dogra, who visited the scene of the crime twice in the past week, said the new evidence would help in “narrowing down” the turn of events. “In the interest of the investigation I will not like to divulge details but the truth will emerge from the new evidence,” he said.
According to sources in the forensic department, the exhumation established that the hymen of 17-year-old Aasiya Jan, the younger victim, was intact.
“The virginity of the younger victim was established beyond doubt and the hymen was intact. Once the organs have been examined, the investigation should move in the right direction,” said a source on the condition of anonymity.
The team of forensic experts from AIIMS returned from Shopian on Tuesday afternoon.
The doctors have dissected the genitalia of both victims which will be examined at AIIMS in the coming weeks. Since all cavities in the bodies had not been opened during the first post-mortem, samples from chest cavity and the head have also been taken this time. Besides this, hair, lungs, throat, bones and vaginal swabs have been collected.
Experts will look at the viscera collected during the first post mortem and send the newly collected organs for microscopic examination and DNA sampling. The samples collected in Shopian have been given to the magistrate who will send it to the CBI and they will then forward it to AIIMS.
