Out of Africa
Experience life in the bush with Safari Sisters
Any day is a typical day for the girls. “Extremely busy,” their voices crack through the lines. “It’s school, gym, ballet and back to gym again,” tell 13-year-old Lindy and 11-year-old Penny. Well, typical, yes, but not till they pack their bags and pitch a tent with their dad,the Emmy-Award-winning wildlife filmmaker Kim Wolhuter. And together, the three log their travels and adventures in the African Savannah,in a show they call the Safari Sisters. “And it airs on the Animal Planet,” shriek the girls, following their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and playing a bigger role in Kim’s wildlife documentation and conservation efforts. FYI,Kim Wolhuter comes from a lineage of Kruger National Park game rangers and has spent his entire life in South Africa documenting nature’s wonders. His father,Harry Wolhuter, was the first game ranger in Kruger National Park and a legend in South Africa who survived a lion attack by fighting them off single-handedly with a knife.
“It’s life in the bush, and it was my idea to rope in the girls, give them a taste of both the worlds,” says Kim,as they film the show extempore. “There are no retakes,no preparations,” he adds. Meanwhile, the girls give us an account of their encounters from befriending leopards, hyenas and dogs to developing “elephantophobia” and successfully conserving rhinoceros. “The idea is to make people interested in wildlife, make it entertaining and at the same time create awareness through this experience,” Kim feels the pressing problem right now is the increasing cases of rabies. “Less than 5,000 wild dogs remain in Africa today and one of our episode’s A Dog’s Life chronicles the cause behind the impending demise of the wild dogs,” Kim and his daughters acquaint themselves with a pack on Malilangwe Reserve in Zimbabwe and try to save this species from an animal epidemic. While Lindy wants to make a film on vultures,Penny’s fascinated hyenas. “We also want to catch a leopard and an elephant,” they say. That’s quite a safari spirit! Catch the show on Animal Planet every Wednesday at 8 pm and Thursdays,6:30 pm.

So long,farewell!
