Tumour cancerous, Yuvi undergoes chemo

All-rounder Yuvraj Singh is undergoing chemotherapy for a tumour in his left lung, which was initially diagnosed as non-malignant but has now been detected as cancerous.

"Yuvraj is in Indiana, Boston, along with his mother Shabnam Singh. In order to avoid surgery, Yuvraj is undergoing chemotherapy sessions, which will continue till March end," Yuvraj's manager R K Kapoor told The Indian Express.

His physio Jatin Chaudhary told PTI that the cancer had been detected very early, in Stage-I, and was "100 per cent curable". He said the treatment was delayed because his first biopsy report was stolen from his car while a hospital in India later gave wrong diagnosis.

"As parts of the tumour are just above an artery of the heart, there was a danger that while running it could burst. It was a Russian doctor who detected the cancer and after consultations with doctors in the US, it was decided that Yuvraj would undergo chemotherapy. Thankfully no surgery is required, he is already a lot better than he was and can't wait to be back on the cricket field. By the end of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then. After that it is just some rehabilitation in April before he is fit to be back on the field in May," Chaudhary said.

The tumour was first discovered after the World Cup, where Yuvraj was incidentally adjudged man of the series.

With the tumour earlier believed to be non-malignant, Yuvraj had targeted a return to the Indian team during the on-going tri-series in Australia following medication and therapy. However, following medical tests, he was advised to go in for further treatment on the eve of the team selection.

Yuvraj was at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore before he travelled to the United States on January 26 for treatment.
