TV channels asked to pull off ‘obscene’ ads

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) has issued an advisory to all channels, asking them to pull off air two “objectionable” advertisements for undergarments. After the ministry received some complaints from viewers on the suggestive and offensive nature of the advertisements of Lux Cozy and Frenchie X undergarments, it issued an advisory on Thursday to all channels to pull them out. The advertisements were being frequently aired, amongst other channels, on Set Max which is broadcasting the IPL cricket series.

The advisory to pull out these ads comes soon after the ministry had asked some channels to apologise to viewers for some other similar ads. Last week, a music channel had to run a scroll continuously for three days for airing advertisements of a popular men's deodorant and perfume.

Like the undergarment ads, the deodorant ads were also being aired repeatedly on some channels.

The advertisements were revoked because these were considered “indecent, vulgar and suggestive” and violated rule 7(8) of the advertising code prescribed in the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995.

The code lays down that “indecent, vulgar, suggestive, repulsive or offensive themes or treatment shall be avoided in all advertisements”.

No show-cause notice has been issued to the channels on the issue as yet.
