The police arrested two persons for a self-immolation bid near the Paldi crossroads and detained 51 others for creating a ruckus outside the office of the registrar of the cooperative societies, on Thursday.
The police said a group of people had gathered outside the office of the registrar of the cooperative societies near Paldi circle to seek action against builders Nitin Patel and Kirit Patel. Later, two among the group threatened self-immolation if their demand for taking action against the two builders was not accepted, said Investigating Officer, Inspector J B Gahdvi said:.
The group had earlier lodged a complaint of fraud against the builders with the Odhav Police in May.
Gahdvi said: “The people held a dharna on June 29 which was to conclude on Thursday. When they could not talk to the concerned officers, two among them threatened of self-immolation. Alarmed, we seized kerosene bottles from their possession and took them into custody.”
The police said a written statement was later taken from the two at the Mamlatdar’s office promising no suicide attempt by them.
Gadhvi said the duo was booked under CrPC 151 and their statements were recorded at the police station along with that of the others. The Odhav police would undertake further investigation against the builders, he added.
The builders had allegedly constructed Seema Park Society illegally in 1979-80 and had procured loans for the residents based on forged bank documents. The first complaint against them was lodged with the Odhav police on May 24. The society has 109 houses.
