The Kerala Police cyber cell on Sunday arrested two youths on charges of circulating an e-mail, which contained a picture of a palatial mansion, wrongly attributed to CPM Politburo member and state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

The arrested were Manoj, employed in Nigeria, and Karthik, a student of Chartered Accountancy. Manoj was on leave in Kerala. A magistrate court granted them bail. They were booked as per Section 66 (A) of the amended IT Act of 2008, which said sending offensive messages through electronic means was punishable. This is the first criminal case registered in Kerala as per the amended Act, said cyber cell Dy SP G Sukumara Pillai.

Vijayan had last Monday lodged a complaint against the e-mail campaign. On inquiry, it was found that the house belonged to an NRI at Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district. Pillai said the police were yet to track the source of the mail. The duo were arrested on charges of forwarding the mail after adding captions which said, ‘Working class leader’s hut’ and ‘Lal Salaam comrade’. The mail had been forwarded to nearly three lakh addresses, he said, adding that the arrests would send a strong message to all those who spontaneously forward malevolent e-mails to others.

Frustration wont help!By: Ras | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Let the Police and then court decide. Criminals even if they are on net should be punished. Here now what we see on internet is the frustration of many who were enjoying non defended lies and propaganda against a party and its leaders. They have got what they deserve. Frustration is not going to help.
How come india is still a democracyBy: Ajit | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Without the basic free speech, how is India trying to hold on to the democracy. This is something you would imagine happening in the theocracies, not in a country like India. May be we are getting there. Every society gets a government it deserves.
Defaming democracyBy: people | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward He called a bishop "nikrista geevi" to defame him in public ..... Did anyone arrest him ....So he can defame others but others cannot .....Double standards ...... Press should answer to this ....Take the clipings of his speech and show the police how many times he defamed the good personalities ......Press should take up an investigation on what he did with the scam money .... How big is his house ...... I believe only the media can do a balancing act now .... Its for democracy to stay in India ...... This rule in cyber law will just "bring fear in people for their freedom of speech" ..... Its serious and Court should act immediately...Its a cry of a common man .... I don't know how much it will be heard...
