Two claim cops beat them after they refused to pay bribe, move court

A resident of Behlana, Pankaj Sharma, on Wednesday moved the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, alleging that he and his friend were beaten by two police officers in the Sector 17 police station on December 31. The complainant claimed that he was beaten and left unconscious behind a residential area in Sector 22.

According to the complainant, Pankaj Sharma and Anirudh Bhardwaj were standing behind Neelam Theater at 10.30 pm after celebrating at the Plaza on Monday. The two were looking for a taxi when they were approached by two policemen who asked their whereabouts. The two were allegedly asked to follow the officers to the Sector 17 police station for further verification.

Sharma claimed that after the two reached the police station, the officers asked them to pay some money but when the two refused, they were beaten up. While Pankaj was allegedly beaten unconscious, Anirudh was booked under the Excise Act.

The police officers reportedly threw Pankaj at the residential area of Sector 22. At 6.30 am, Pankaj gained consciousness and realised that his wallet along with his documents and Rs 5,000 in cash, his phone, a ring and a karah were missing.

"Though the two boys had consumed alcohol, they were not drinking at a public place," said Gagan Aggarwal, counsel for the accused.

Following this, the court on Wednesday directed GMSH-16 medical officer to conduct a medical examination of the complainant.

The SSP, SHO of the Sector 17 police station and in-charge of the police post at Sector 22 have been made party to the complaint for registration of an FIR.

The case has been adjourned to February 26.
