In three separate accidents which took place in Chandigarh in the wee hours of Wednesday, two persons lost their lives and three persons were injured.
In one of the accidents, three students of engineering met with an accident near colony number 5 when one of the three, who was driving the car, lost control and rammed into the grilled road divider.
The police officials said that Jashanpreet Singh, who was driving the car and Abhishek, who was sitting behind the driver's seat and another friend of the two were in the car. Both Jashanpreet and Abhishek were injured as the car upturned when Jashanpreet lost control of the car while crossing the traffic lights at colony number 5. Due to the collision, a part of the grills was uprooted completely.
Jashanpreet and Abhishek were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32. Abhishek was taken to Fortis Hospital from there, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Jashanpreet was also hurt while the third person escaped any injury.
Sub-Inspector Shadi Lal, In-Charge, Police Post, Sector 49, said, "Abhishek had appeared in the final year examination of BTech at Rayat-Bahra Institute of Engineering and Technology. He is the son of a Delhi Police Head Constable, Dharindara Pawar".
Lal also said that the police has initiated an inquiry to confirm the cause of the accident.
In another hit-and-run case, a 72-year-old pedestrian was hit by an unidentified car while he was crossing the road at the Sector 16 and 17 dividing road.
The elderly man was rushed to the PGIMER where he succumbed to his injuries while in treatment. The driver of the unknown vehicle fled from the spot, according to the police.
The elderly man was identified as Kartar Singh, a resident of Sector 16, who was on his way home. He was severely injured on his head and legs. A person informed the police about the man lying on the road.
