  • In a freak mishap, a portion of an under-construction bridge and a bulky water pipeline, passing over Central Railway tracks, collapsed on a moving train, here on Friday, killing two persons and injuring 11, officials said.

The mishap occurred about 30 km from Mumbai at 10.30 am when an under-construction bridge, adjacent to existing road overbridge connecting Thane from east to west, fell on a local train below. As the bridge collapsed, it also took along a parallel water pipeline which was supported by a steel enforcement. The support gave away due to the impact of the bridge collapse and the pipeline also fell on the train.

The pipeline as well as the bridge debris fell on the front coaches of the Kalyan-bound train, the officials added. The deceased were identified as R Ramachandra and Subhash Nikam, a motorman and a passenger, respectively.
