Two persons drowned in an abandoned quarry in Chikhali on Thursday when one of them tried to rescue the other who did not know how to swim.
Dehu Road police have identified the victims as Prafull Bansode (29) and Mangesh Nimgade (22). Police said their wives are sisters and the two had gone with them to the waterbody in an abandoned quarry to wash their clothes.
The two worked in a nearby factory and Thursday was their weekly holiday, police said.
Investigating officer Kisan Gaikwad said as sisters Pratibha and Amrapali were washing clothes, Bansode entered into the water for swimming and Mangesh stayed out as he could not swim. While washing clothes, Nimgade's wife Amrapali fell into the water as she lost her balance.
Gaikwad said Mangesh jumped into the water and managed to rescue his wife by pushing her towards the shore but could not save himself from drowning. Bansode tried to rescue him but both drowned as Mangesh held him tightly out of fear.
A fire brigade was called by the local residents after the women raised alarm. Their bodies were fished out and taken to a hospital where they were declared brought dead.
The family belonged to Yawatmala and had come to Pune for work. Their bodies were handed over to the family after postmortem.
