Two Good Samaritans and Vinod Kambli

Mumbai traffic police clear way, rush former cricketer to hospital after he suffers heart attack.

Vinod Kambli, who was said to be stable in hospital on Friday night, has a Mumbai traffic police constable to thank for saving him from immediate danger after suffering a heart attack while driving.

Timely action by constable Kumardatta Shendge of the Matunga traffic division ensured the former cricketer got quick medical assistance. He was taken to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).

According to the police,Kambli, who was driving from Chembur to his home in Bandra, pulled up in his Mitsubishi Pajero near a police vehicle parked on the Eastern Express Highway at 9.30 am on Friday.

“I was stationed there on patrol when a big white car suddenly stopped in front of me. Kambli was inside and he said that he seemed to be having a heart attack and needed to be taken to a hospital. Immediately,I called my senior and asked her what I should do,” Constable Shendge said.

His boss,Senior Inspector Sujata Patil, who happened to be patrolling nearby, acted swiftly. “As soon as Kumardatta apprised me of the situation.

I called the traffic control room and asked that a path be cleared for us to Bandra,” she said.

Patil said Kambli was in severe pain. “He kept saying ‘someone is trying to kill me’,‘help me’. We tried our best to comfort him. Kumardatta held his arms throughout the journey, massaging him and attempting to calm him down,” she said.

She said Kambli had managed to inform his wife, who had arranged for an ambulance. “She said that an ambulance was on its way from Bandra. But we knew we had no time to wait. We could also not risk carrying him out of his vehicle and into another one in that condition,” Patil said.

So Kumardatta drove Kambli’s car,and Patil followed in her patrol car. “The control room had made sure that we did not have to stop even once. We reached Lilavati Hospital in 12 minutes,” she said.

Kambli, who is 41 and has had cardiac problems in the past, was admitted to ICU at 10 am. “We are monitoring his parameters. His condition is stable and there is nothing to worry about,“ Dr Narendra Trivedi, director,Lilavati Hospital, said in the evening. He said Kambli would remain in ICU for now.
