Alleged Hizbul Mujahideen men Javed Ahmed Tantray and Ashiq Ali Batt,arrested around midnight on Thursday,were planning a suicide attack in crowded places in Delhi,Special Cell sources have said.

On the agenda was also a “shooting spree”,their interrogation has revealed among other things.

The duo,caught in the parking lot of Mahavir Vatika in Daryaganj,had reportedly driven down from Jammu in a stolen Santro car. “We had intelligence report on the duo and followed them from the Delhi border. We wanted to know who they had been instructed to meet. They were caught outside Mahavir Vatika when Javed came out and placed a call from a public booth to one Shahid in Pakistan,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P N Aggarwal said.

They had on them two AK-47 rifles,four magazines and two hand grenades. A senior officer said: “They were to meet one Rizwan at the Sarai Kale Khan bus stand to get directions about the operation.”

Officers also said both Javed and Ali have met Hizbul chief Peer Sayed Salauddin and deputy chief Khalid Saifullah. DCP,Special Cell,Alok Kumar said: “Javed drove vehicles in the militant-training camps across the border.”

Javed,from Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir,joined Hizbul in 1997. Kumar said: “He crossed to Pakistan in 1997 via Korna and was trained at the Leepa camp office of the Hizbul.” Ali joined them in 2003 and was trained in the jungles of Kathua,interrogation has revealed.

The two men did not know each other before July 29,officers said,since they had been trained in different camps. Shahid,whom Javed had called on Thursday night before being arrested,organised their travel to India. They came from Pakistan via Nepal. They stayed in Pokhra till August 3,when they crossed over to India at Sonoli.
