Two people were killed when an unidentified person opened indiscriminate fire inside the casualty ward of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak on Wednesday evening.
The police suspect personal rivalry to be behind the incident in which the hospitals security guard,Tejvir Singh, was killed. The other victim, identified as Praveen, was in hospital for the treatment of his brother, who had met with an accident.
The firing started soon after Praveen came to the hospital with his injured brother Sanjay. An unidentified person opened fire, killing Praveen at point-blank range, Superintendent of Police (Rohtak) Satheesh Balan said.
There was confusion in the hospital. After at least five rounds were fired, security guard Tejvir Singh, who was unarmed, tried to nab the assailant, he said.
Balan said the assailant first fired at Singhs legs and when he refused to let go,he fired at his chest.
There is talk that Praveens rivalry with one Jai Bhagwan, who was also in the same ward for bullet injuries he received earlier in the day, could have led to the shooting.
Jai Bhagwan, along with his brother Sanjeev, had already given a statement to the police, suspecting Praveens hand in the alleged bid on his life earlier in the day.
The police were yet to establish at whose behest the shootings were carried out. We are questioning Jai Bhagwans brother Sanjeev. He is the only one who got injured during the hospital shootout, but the injury is on his right shoulder, and it is suspicious, said SP Balan.
