Two men throw acid on Dalit woman

Two men allegedly threw acid at a Dalit woman's face in Alambagh area on Friday morning. The woman suffered about 20 per cent burns and was hospitalised for treatment.

Police lodged an FIR under various sections of IPC including 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) against unidentified persons.

According to police, Bimla, a permanent resident of Rae Bareli, who works as a domestic help in Alambagh area, was going near Kailashpuri Mor at around 11 am when two youths came and started an scuffle with her. After the woman fell on the ground, they spilled acid on her body causing injuries at her face, hands and abdomen. The woman was admitted to the hospital by the locals.

Amita Singh, Circle Officer (Alambagh), said the woman was living in a rented house in Alambagh area with her husband and two children. The incident took place when there were not many people on the road as it was raining, she said, adding that the woman suffered about 20 per cent burns.

Singh said prima facie it has been found that the woman's family had a dispute with another man in their village in Rae Bareli district and she had filed a case under Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against him. The woman has alleged that she was being harassed by the family of the accused, Tribhuan Singh, to withdraw the case. She said that she had seen the persons who threw acid at her earlier also but did not know their names, the CO said.

The woman has alleged that she was also beaten up by some people in April last to force her to withdraw the case. Police were trying to contact the victim's husband to take his help in identifying the accused, CO Amita Singh said.
