Two MLAs, a corporator and 150 others were booked for allegedly rioting and preventing cops from discharging their duty in suburban Mulund, police said today.
According to the police, a mob of about 150 people, including BJP MLA Sardar Tara Singh, MNS MLA Shishir Shinde, BJP corporator Prakash Gangadhare began setting fire to the Neelam Nagar shanties in Mulund yesterday, alleging that they had come up on government land. hen the police tried to stop them, the mob allegedly turned violent, the police said. The accused have been booked under charges of unlawful assembly, rioting and preventing public servants from discharging their duty.
"As of now, 10 people including corporator Prakash Gangadhare have been arrested," Navghar police station's senior inspector Ganesh Gaikwad said, though two MLAs have not yet been arrested.
However, Bhartiya Tatwagyan Vishwasth Mandal president Kashmira Bhatt, alleged that "goons" staying in these shanties had been troubling mentally handicapped people who were being imparted vocational training by the NGO.
A delegation of the NGO located in same area had met Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Sadanand Date, seeking action against the goons.
