Dinesh Mongia’s wait to get back to mainstream cricket is not over yet. The former India player and Indian Cricket League recruit was not named in Punjab’s list of probables for the 2009-10 Ranji season, with the state association saying that he has not been cleared by the BCCI.
The reason, according to the Indian cricket board, is the ICL’s refusal to give Mongia and four other cricketers No Objection Certificates (NOCs) following the allegations of under-performance in the unofficial Twenty20 league’s second season last year. Mongia, along with former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns, were suspended by the ICL after the allegations had surfaced.
The matter is also said to be under the scanner of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the BCCI says it can’t allow the players to participate in the domestic season till they get the go ahead from the ICL.
“The BCCI is not aware what is going on between the ICL and ICC. I can only confirm that ICL did not give an NOC to four players including Mongia. So, the board has also not cleared their names for taking part in the domestic season,” said MP Pandove BCCI treasurer and PCA secretary.
Former Punjab captain Mongia, who is playing club cricket in Chandigarh these days, said he had no clue why had not been cleared. “All I know is that the BCCI has not cleared my name for taking part in the domestic circuit. I have not been conveyed any message either from the BCCI or the Punjab Cricket Association. Right now, I am just concentrating on my fitness and waiting for the matter to be resolved soon.”
