Two more cops held for Ishrat encounter

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tarun Barot and retired DSP K M Vaghela in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday arrested Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tarun Barot and retired DSP K M Vaghela in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. With this,the total number of arrests has risen to four.

On Friday,the CBI had arrested retired DSP J G Parmar,who lodged an FIR with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch in the case in 2004 alleging that Ishrat and the three others killed with her were terrorists.

Barot and Vaghela were already in judicial custody in the Sadiq Jamal encounter case. Barot is among those policemen who was known as Gujarat’s “encounter specialist”. He had fired some six rounds on the alleged terrorists in this case.

The Detention of Crime Branch had come up with an intelligence input saying that Ishrat Jahan,her friends Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillia,Amjad Ali Rana and Jishan Johar were Lashkar operatives who were on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

However,the Gujarat HC-appointed Special Investigation Team,after a detailed forensic examinations,found the case flawed. Ishrat and the three others were gunned down on June 15,2004 by a crime branch team led by then ACP Girish Singhal,who had been arrested Thursday.

Meanwhile,the special CBI court rejected the agency’s remand application for J G Parmar and sent him to Sabarmati jail. Barot will be produced before court on Sunday,sources said.
