Two more dead in Punjab violence

Punjab was by and large peaceful on Tuesday, barring Muktsar district where protestors clashed with police even as violence over the killing of a sect leader in Vienna spread to some areas of neighbouring Haryana.

The situation in Punjab continued to be tense on Tuesday, with the death toll reaching three and curfew being imposed in two more cities,Muktsar and Malout, after dera followers clashed with the police. In Jalandhar, one Vijay Kumar died late on Monday night after Akali Dal councillor Balbir Singh fired at a mob. Another agitator,Roop Rani, died of heart failure when she was protesting at Nakodar Chowk.

In Malout, dera followers pelted the police with stones when the district authorities attempted to prevent them from progressing on a march. Some policemen, including Additional Deputy Commissioner,Muktsar, were injured in the incident. The police opened fire on the agitators, injuring one person.

In Muktsar,400-500 dera followers attacked police personnel deployed outside Ravi Dass Bhavan after they held a prayer meeting for Sant Ramanand at a local gurdwara. They were soon joined by local residents, who also pelted stones, forcing the police to lathicharge and then open fire on the mob.

A four-hour curfew relaxation in Ludhiana from 10 am to 2 pm passed off peacefully, except for a solitary incident of stone pelting. Security remained heavy.
