  • Two students from Punjab and Madhya Pradesh have become the latest victims of attacks on Indians in Australia when they were assaulted by a group of men separately, even as Canberra assured New Delhi of the safety and security of Indians here.

Gaurav Kakkar, a student of a hairdressing course, was attacked by a group of men when he was talking to his family in Punjab's Ferozpur from a local telephone booth.

"I was attacked by a group of men on Friday. I don’t even know how many were there as they sprayed capsicum spray into my eyes. I could not see anything and few of them grabbed me from behind and started hitting me," Kakkar said.

"They dragged me to some other place where they threw chilli flakes into my mouth and my eyes and nose," he said.

Kakkar said he called up the police for help after the attackers left the scene who also took his wallet.

Kakkar was then taken to hospital and was discharged two days later.

Mohit, a student from Indore, was attacked from behind with a beer bottle on his head and beaten up with a baseball bat on his waist and leg by the four youths on Friday, sources said.

Mohit had gone to Australia about two years back to pursue his study in BE.

Confirming the incident, Mohit's father Anil Mangal, who runs an automobile business in Indore, said the condition of Mohit was out of danger.

"My son had no enmity with anyone there and the incident, it appears, might be a continuation of ongoing racial attacks on Indian students in Australia', Anil said.

    ... contd.

indian SincerityBy: ExEnrolmentOfficer | 17-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward I like international students.I used to be an enrolment officer for an Australian school. I was sadly, very disappointed with the indian students who either enrolled at the college or who sought enrolment at the college. it is a requirement for international students to have acceptable levels of English before enrolling in their course. We often uncovered fraudulent behaviour in this area making study and participation very difficult for the student. It is also a Visa requirement that International students who want to come to Australia should have enough money to pay their tuition and support themselves BEFORE they come to Australia. We regularly found Indian students arriving in Australia with less than 1 week's living expenses making it imperative for the student to place work above study. This is not the purpose of a STUDENT visa. Many Indian students just failed to attend college whereas most students from other nationalities (including Australian) Attendance was excellent.
there are more engineering colleges in india and study in india itselfBy: Indian | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward I am really failed to understand that why did this boy went to Australia(to study B.E). Did he not find so many engineering colleges in India ! Why did his parents agree to send him to Australia when they have plenty of engineering colleges in India. It looks it is the fashion of the day for the boys and as well to parents to say that he has degree from Australia. The whole world is now looking for indian degree and that too Indian degree is rated high(at least in UG courses). My advice, being in the education sector for 4 decades, is to ge their engineering, medicine education from India itself. Leave out the prestige issue.
MrBy: Immigrant Australian | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward If the number of Indian students in Australia is 95000 and 25 have been attacked, then the proportion attacked is not "sporadic", it is almost invisible. By Hary's reasoning it must be criminal activity rather than racism. The plain fact is that the police cannot prevent every attack from taking place. In Melbourne the police now patrol railway stations and other high crime areas more than they used to. This is not specifically for Indian students but because of a general increase in assault rates. These rates are still lower in Australia than they are in Indian cities. What do Indians want - a police escort for every student? If this is really such an issue for Indians, then the Australian government should restrict student entry to those who can afford not to work and to live in decent areas. This would affect the mainly Indian-run colleges but Australia can survive without them. Australian universities would also suffer somewhat but more government money is on the way to help them.
Crime problemBy: Aussie | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward If every Indian student had enough money so that they did'nt have to live, travel or work in dangerous suburbs , especailly late at night then l bet most of these attacks would not have happened. Most attacks probably have nothing to do with race and in many of the attacks on Indians have been carried out by Lebanese, pacific islanders and other races
Indian Students are a disgrace to other Indians living in AustraliaBy: Brisvegas | 11-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward If you cannot afford the studies here, leave. Let other Indian Migrants who have become part of Australia live in peace. It is a disgrace to see you Punjabis on the road. You do not have any idea this is Australia not Patiala. Learn to behave in Public first. It wont be long before the Local Indian will be against you. Racism My Arse
I am beginning to doubt the integrity of local police in those townsBy: Hary Nambiar | 10-Aug-2009 Reply | Forward It is natural for people to move to improve their prospects. In the initial stages they work menial jobs to pay for their tuition and living expenses. In a few years they manage to improve their living standards. Australia is not the only destination of foreign students. They go all over the world. However, people don’t gang up and beat them up in the streets when they travel alone. If it is a sporadic event, it can be said to be a criminal activity. When it is done by people of certain race against people of other races consistently, it is a RACIAL issue. This used to happen rarely to homeless people in US, but the media and the local police have a zero tolerance and it does not happen any more. Generally, police in all communities have a dossier on criminals and local people know them. I am beginning to doubt the integrity of local police on this issue. Australian government could be stricter on their police too.
