Punjab was forced to undergo long power cuts for upto six hours after two units of the Ropar Thermal plant tripped today, leading to acute shortage of power. The state lost as much as 420 MW power on Friday due to the tripping of the two thermal power generation units at the Ropar power plant.

While one of the Ropar Thermal plant units tripped due to a boiler tube leakage yesterday, the other tripped following a generator earth fault, which could be located only by the evening on Friday.

PSEB engineers were busy rectifying the fault and trying to restart the operations, sources said. Meanwhile, due to the tripping of the thermal units, producing 210 MW each, the lower availability of power the gap between the demand and supply of power to Punjab widened further. While power available to the the state on Friday was 780 lakh units, the demand rose to 1,000 lakh units.
