Two to tango

ALTHOUGH it is the responsibility of the government to bring the opposition on board, the latter also has a duty to support the former on issues of vital economic importance ('Craft a conversation', IE, November 1). In an era of coalition politics, any successful implementation of reforms requires cooperation between political parties. The BJP is doing itself a disservice by adopting a belligerent stand on market reforms that it had successfully championed when it was in power at the Centre. This is both bad politics and bad economics.

Cost effective

THE digitisation of cable TV is a much awaited and welcome step ('A clear picture', IE, November 1). It will usher in an era of consumer choice. The scarcity of bandwidth that cable operators have previously referred to will no longer be a problem. The channels will be aptly rewarded for providing quality service, which was previously a challenge because the number of connections was limited. The only issue that must be handled carefully is that of cost. Digitisation should not create an "elitist" bias. The cost of digitisation should be such that the less privileged can continue to access information and entertainment on TV.

Green role model

THIS refers to 'Clean it like Pune' (IE, October 31). Pune's successful handling of waste is a shining example for the entire nation. The increase in urban populations has made the need for waste management extreme. Pune has set an inspiring example by addressing this otherwise neglected issue. It is hoped that other cities will follow Pune's example and work to clean up their environment.

Cricket at last

IT IS good to read that India-Pakistan cricket will resume in India ('Govt leaves Mumbai attack behind, clears Pak tour of India', IE, October 31). The two countries, which have not hosted each other for cricket matches in the past five years, have a long-standing and healthy cricket rivalry that transcends political differences. Matches between India and Pakistan held in either country are a special event for cricket fans on both sides of the border, while matches conducted in other countries do not evoke the same levels of excitement.
