Two women attacked in separate incidents

Even as city police commissioner Satyapal Singh has claimed that Mumbai is safe for women, two incidents of women being attacked were reported in one day.

In the first incident, a 30-year-old housewife was attacked with a dagger near her Sewree residence, allegedly by an alcoholic on Thursday evening. Police said the accused, Vilas Chorghe (28), is a history sheeter and has been arrested.

Police said a drunk Chorghe took a dagger from a coconut stall and barged into a building near Sewree bus depot around 5.30 pm. The victim, Preeti Jaiswal is a resident of the building.

"Preeti had gone to the parking area to get her Scooty when Chorghe came out running. He had a dagger in his hand, and assaulted her," said Preeti's cousin Anil Jaiswal.

Several residents chased Chorghe, overpowered him and disarmed him. By this time, a team from the RAK Marg police also reached the spot. "Chorghe tried to resist arrest and got into a scuffle with our officers," said DCP (Zone 4), Dattatray Karale.

Police said Chorghe often picked fights with residents of the building due to an old dispute over allotment of flats under Slum Rehabilitation Authority's scheme, although this information is being verified. Preeti is undergoing treatment at KEM hospital, police said.

In another incident, a 36-year-old woman was allegedly attacked with a razor by her estranged husband outside Vidyavihar railway station on Wednesday night.

Police said the victim, Anusuya Gaikwad, is a labourer. Her husband Vijay (40) is alcoholic and unemployed. He would allegedly beat her up and demand money from her. She finally left him, taking her her two sons with her.

"Late on Wednesday night, Vijay reached the skywalk construction site and attacked Anusuya. Some construction workers rushed to help and overpowered him, while others informed police. A police team took Vijay into custody and he was later arrested," said an officer.
