Two women die at MP sterilisation camp

Two women lost their lives and two were left critical at a camp to sterilise women in a government hospital in Tyonda village of Vidisha district, forcing the Madhya Pradesh government to order a detailed inquiry.

Madhya Pradesh follows a targeted approach to family planning with every district told to annually cover its one per cent population, which occasionally leads to excesses as the year draws to an end.

Sixteen women were supposed to go under the scalpel in this weekly camp. According to initial reports the cause of death was medicines injected into the women on the operation table.

The government sent a three-member probe team to Tyonda to find the exact cause of death. While the Opposition Congress alleged that the medicines were not meant for human beings, the probe team suggested wrong dosage as the cause of death.

When women started vomiting, the doctors panicked and all 16 were referred to the district hospital in Vidisha on Monday evening. Two women were declared dead on arrival while the condition of two was reported to be critical.

Vidisha Collector Anand Kumar Sharma told The Indian Express that all the 14 patients, including the two whose condition had been reported to be critical, were out of danger. He denied the medicines were past expiry date, but said injections appeared to have caused the deaths.
