  • The lifeless body of two-year-old Sonu was on Monday pulled out by rescue workers, four days after he fell into a 150-ft deep borewell that was carelessly left uncovered allegedly by district authorities in Shamsabad town in Agra.

Army and paramilitary personnel had joined locals in digging a parallel tunnel soon after the incident on Thursday in Lehrakapura village but the rescue work was hampered by frequent mudslides due to the soggy nature of the soil as the site was located near a pond.

"He is no more," S N Medical College Principal N C Prajapati said after the boy was examined at the district hospital. The body has been sent for post mortem.

The child was stuck in the borewell at the depth of about 70-ft for the last 98 hours. No movement had been noticed or any sound heard from him two hours after he fell into the well, rescue workers said.

The district administration has already ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. It has also suspended two officials of the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam for negligence as they had allegedly left the borewell uncovered.

This is the second such incident in the district in four months. A two-year-old girl Vandana had fallen into a bore well and was rescued after over 26 hours of efforts.

In 2006, a kid named Prince had fallen into a borewell and was rescued after two days of tremendous efforts by army and district authorities in Kurukshetra in Haryana.

Sonu's family will be given Rs one lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, District Magistrate Anil Kumar said.

The grieving family blamed the authorities for the death of the boy. The child's father Pappu accused the officials of mishandling the rescue operation.

The inconsolable mother refused to speak to anyone.

sonu case of borewellBy: kiran | 18-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward its not fine from the father of the child accusing the rescue operation team. there is even the neglegence of the parents leaving their child near the borewell even after knowing that there is a borewell there.
accountabilityBy: vishal | 14-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward Letme tell you how to stop these kind of things from happening - Choice 1 : The court throws the officials whose negligence caused this in jail for 20 years citing "death of a minor due to negligence" choice 2 : the public grabs hold of the officials and stomp the life out of them. Next time when a borewell is dug, the officials incharge of that particular borewell will be out at 10 in the night to inspect that the hole is properly covered. It is human nature of relax and let things fly unless they are afraid of the consequences. Make them afraid of the consequences. Things will automatically change. Let them go scot free and 6 months later you will be writing another sorry comment for some other Munnu losing his life to these borewells.
Sonu's deathBy: Sunil Sahasrabudhe | 14-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward There are no words to describe sonu's parents mental condition. But then this thing was waiting to happen when careless authorities and equally careless parents are out there. It's unfortunate that a child lost his life for no fault of him. My sympathies with every parent who have lost their child or children. May sonu's soul rest in peace.
SonuBy: Abraham | 14-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward So sad of Sonu a little one lost life because of someone else negligence. I can't imagine how the little one would have battled for life in that pit 70ft below. We as indians do not have a basic habit of safety. We find pits dug up by telephone dept., municpal corporation and all others who are eligible to dig and leave the open pit for someone to die. We need to act fast file a PIL (public interest litigation) aganist this and punish them for what the do.
How many more deaths are they going to wait for?By: Suchitra Poduval | 13-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward How many more deaths of young innocent victims are they going to wait for? Why isn't there a system in place? And why a system, don't they have any common sense or sense of humanity even? That a borewell left open is a sheer invitation for death and only for little kids?? All they need to so is close it up!! The engineers who are in charge of such operations ought to be hanged, not just suspended, because they are too shameless to be affected by just a suspension. Madam, Mayawati, wake up!!
