UAPA will not be misused: Shinde
Rejecting charges of alleged misuse of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde assured the Lok Sabha that the Centre will ensure that it is not misused. He was responding to Asaduddin Owaisi who said, "UAPA is used only against Muslims; against Dalits; against tribals. And they are branded Maoists. We do not want this draconian Act."
Uproar over Aiyar 'animal' remarks
THE Rajya Sabha was in turmoil as the members raised objections to reported comments of Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar comparing MPs shouting slogans in the well with "animals" and demanded an apology. A red-faced Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla tendered an immediate apology on behalf of Aiyar and informed the House that he will talk to him in this regard.
BJP speaks up for 'death feasts'
OPPOSING a demand for initiating measures to remove the tradition of giving a feast or bhoj after a death in a family, the opposition BJP said it is an attack on Hindu religious beliefs and demanded expunging the remark from the proceedings of the House. The demand was raised in the House by Samajwadi Party leader Darshan Singh Yadav through a Special Mention, terming the tradition of death feast a "social evil" which had no scientific base.
