UID project to roll out in city from Monday

Come Monday and the city residents can start registering for the Aaadhar project,better known as the Unique Identification number (UID) project.

“The registration of citizens for the UID project would begin from January 10. This will enable every citizen to get a 12-digit identity code.

The citizens should take advantage and register themselves for the UID number,” said municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade.

The administration would urge Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal to start the UID registration to encourage more citizens to come forward.

The UID will enable planning of schemes for the public and ensure that maximum number of people benefit from it,Zagade said,along with assisting people in opening bank accounts,availing services of the public distribution system,pension,scholarship and medical insurance.

The state government has appointed agencies to implement the project,he said,adding that the city has been divided in four parts so that one agency operates in one part. The agencies are Wipro,Smart Chip Ltd,Tera Software Ltd and Maha Online.

Wipro has ben entrusted with the area of Hadapsar,Kothrud,Aundh and Warje ward office. Smart Chip Ltd will operate in Bibewadi,Sangamwadi,Kasba and Dhole-Patil ward office,while Tera Software Ltd will do registrations for Ghole Road,Yerawada,Tilak Road and Dhankawadi ward office. The Maha Online agency will carry out the work in Bhavani Peth and Sahakarnagar ward office.

Zagade said every registered citizen will have to give fingerprints of all 10 fingers,scanning of iris along with a photograph to get the 12-digit UID,that will be sent through post.

Around 46 machines have been made available for the purpose and demand for more would be made according to the situation,he added.

Citizens above five years of age will get the UID on their names,while those below five years will get it on the name of their parents.

The citizens have to submit photocopies of one of 17 documents for identity proof,one of the 29 documents for address proof and one of the four documents for birth date. A verifier at each centre would carry out the verification before registration.

The project,being executed by information and technology department of the state government,has appointed the municipal commissioner as registrar,14 ward officers as deputy registrar and assistant census officer as nodal officer for UID.
