UK nurse’s family says she ‘died of shame’, RJs sorry

The distraught family of an Indian-origin nurse, who got caught up in a prank call made to a hospital treating Prince William's wife Kate, believe she died of shame after falling for the hoax.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46. was found dead at nurses' quarters next to the private King Edward VII hospital in Marylebone, central London Friday.

Her brother Naveen has said his sister died of shame following the royal hospital hoax. He was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying his devoutly Catholic sister was a "proper and righteous person". She would have been "devastated" at unwittingly assisting a colleague in breaching medical confidentiality over the condition of Kate.

"She would have felt much shame about the incident," Naveen said.

Saldanha's husband Benedict Barboza expressed his sadness on his Facebook page with a short note, Obituary Jacintha. "I am devastated with the tragic loss of my beloved wife Jacintha in tragic circumstances." He said she will be laid to rest in Shirva, India.

Meanwhile, the Australian RJs behind the hoax call to the hospital were deeply apologetic Monday as they described how their joke ended up going too far.

"Not a minute goes by when we don't think about her family," 2DayFM radio host Mel Greig told A Current Affair, her voice shaking. "And the thought we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching."

Police have not disclosed the cause of Saldanha's death, but many assume it was related to stress from the call. An autopsy will be held Tuesday.
