Vijay Nambiar, special envoy to Myanmar, held talks with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi in her Yangon residence for nearly two hours on Saturday.
His itinerary did not include Naypyitaw, home to government ministers and junta top brass, and diplomats said this indicates many hurdles ahead to engage the generals.
Suu Kyi welcomed the Indian diplomat’s visit and called for more engagement with the United Nations. It was a worthwhile meeting for all. We need to meet more, she said.
However,a retired Burmese academic said,We can say it is the beginning of a new scenario: a new UN envoy,Suu Kyi free, newly elected parties and candidates and so on.
But the key player is missing. Without meetings with senior regime leaders, something tangible cannot be expected out of this visit, he added.
