UN resolution against Iran gets record number of vote

The Iran resolution in the 193 member assembly passed with 86 votes in favour,six more than last year,while the number against fell from 44 to 32 compared to 2010. There were 59 abstentions.

The resolution,proposed by Canada,condemned “torture and cruel,inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,including flogging and amputations” carried out by Iranian authorities.

It also deplored a “dramatic increase” in the use of the death penalty,particularly against minors and those aged under 18 when capital punishment was ordered.

Iranian government representative,Mohammad Javad Larijani,an advisor to the country’s supreme leader,called the resolution “malicious.”
