Following the cancellation of the Question Hour on Monday due to the absence of MPs who were scheduled to ask questions,an angry Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is writing to leaders of all political parties expressing her annoyance at the development. Congress president Sonia Gandhi,too,has asked for detailed attendance records of her party members.

With the per-minute expenditure of Parliament being Rs 34,888 — calculated,say official sources,on the basis of a day’s expense of Rs 1.57 crore — and only 110 MPs being present by noon when the Question Hour is meant to end,there is concern about the House matters.

However,the biggest casualty of Monday’s cancellation would be the crucial questions — as many as 17 — which were slated to be asked but now would take a long time to get listed. These questions are:

• Harsh Vardhan on whether factory-wise targets have been laid down for various ordinance factories. 

• Pulin Bihari Baski and Jaya Prada on whether the government has allowed the export of Basmati rice to some African countries.

• Ganeshamurthi and Sanjay Dhotre on illegal routing of international calls.

• Monazir Hassan and Jagdish Sharma on the impact of FDI on domestic companies.

• Prabodh Panda and Meena Singh on the auction of 2G Spectrum.

• Varun Gandhi and Madhu Goud Yakshi on skill development programmes of the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

• Anandrao Adsul and Adhalraorao Patil Shivaji on the eradication of untouchability (if the government has made any survey at all of the prevalence of untouchability and details of it).

• Sanjay Jaiswal and GM Siddheswara on targets fixed and met under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

• Anto Antony and Rajiv Ranjan Singh on the allocation of funds under NREGA and work days generated over the past three years.

• B B Patil and Eknath Gaikwad on the impact of the recent economic slowdown on traditional export markets.

• P Lingam and Mahendra Kumar Roy on if the government has conducted any surveys on impact of the FTAs with ASEAN and BIMSTEC countries,details thereof if the survey has been commissioned and why not if it hasn’t.

• Asaduddin Owaisi and Baijayant Jay Panda on the National Rural Livelihood Mission.

• Shruti Chowdhry and Wakchaure Bhausaheb Rajaram on if rural community phones are provided and their state-wise details.

• Ahir Vikrambhai Arjanbhai Madaan on whether the infrastructure/institutions available in the country for higher education in the field of maritime study is consistent with the demand.

• P T Thomas and Anurag Singh Thakur on if the government has signed anything with other countries to promote the tea sector or its trading.

• Kirodi Lal Meena and Radha Menon Singh on the state and number of old-age homes in the country.

Sonia seeks list of absent Cong MPs

NEW DELHI: A day after the UPA government suffered an embarrassment in the Lok Sabha due to the absence of many ruling party MPs from the House during the Question Hour,Congress president Sonia Gandhi was learnt to have sought a list of party MPs who had skipped the Question Hour leading to the adjournment of the House. As many as 34 members,including Congress MPs,who had questions listed against their names in the LS,were absent during the Question Hour. Congress sources said on Tuesday that Sonia had taken a serious note of the MPs’ absence. ENS
