At around 5 pm on Saturday afternoon,50-odd men shuffled onto the empty ground, where the Noor Masjid had stood till recently,to offer the evening Namaaz. The decrepit ground with few hastily stacked brick platforms has become a hallowed space for a few,and political battlefield for others. Two Delhi police constables lounged lazily on a motorcycle parked at the entrance of the ground, while a dozen more patrolled the area in the vicinity of the recently demolished structure. They conducted prayers a few times, some politicians came visiting and conducted hasty meetings but,on the whole, things have been very calm, said a constable.
In a corner of the ground, several men huddled around Asghar Khan,a senior advocate and part-time politician with Lok Manch affiliations. Politicians Amar Singh and Jaya Prada had visited the site earlier in the day and a heated discussion re-capping their visit was underway in Asghar Khans corner. Amarji and Jayaji said that once namaz has been offered anywhere, the land belongs to the Muslims. Our people have been praying at this site for the last 35 years and will continue to do so, Khan said.
The DDA obviously wants to grab prime land in Delhi. For them its about the money, he added.
Curiously,by Saturday,a new enemy had been declared the Wakf Board. Asghar Khan goaded by Jawed Alam and other assorted characters explained that the Board had let down its people. It is not the DDAs fault that they demolished the Noor Masjid. The Wakf Board failed to produce accurate documents to support its claim in court,so naturally the court ruled in the RWAs favour. The Board has systematically embezzled funds from shady land deals and has been selling off Muslim land for years.
We will go to the Supreme Court against the Wakf Board, he said, adding that they are collecting money to rebuild the mosque.
Outside the ground,a young boy sporting a skull cap and various bruises said proudly,The police lathi-charged me. Meanwhile,O P Mishra,Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East),said,We received a formal complaint from DDA today regarding people trespassing into the area. A case has been registered under appropriate sections of the law,and necessary action will follow. The situation is under control and the police are maintaining strict vigil to prevent untoward incidents.
Mulayam wants mosque rebuiltSAMAJWADI Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav,on Saturday, slammed the Congress for demolishing the Noor Masjid. He demanded rebuilding of the mosque.
The Congress has created a second Ayodhya in Delhi by demolishing the mosque there. Unlike Ayodhya,it is not a sectarian issue involving two communities. It is the government that has demolished the mosque, said Yadav. ENS/Lucknow
