After Meru Cabs, trade unionism is spreading to other radio taxi services in the city as well. Swabhimaan Sanghatana, which had called a strike of Meru Cabs drivers two times this month, recently organised drivers of Easy Cab as well. Swabhimaan, led by Nitesh Rane, son of Industries Minister Narayan Rane,is also looking at forming a union for Mega Cabs.
The other radio taxi services are relatively smaller as of now and the drivers have not had problems at work. But the fleet is growing,so we formed a union for Easy Cabs last month and plan to start one for Mega Cabs soon, said A K Tiwari, secretary of Swabhimaan.
The union registered about 400 Easy Cabs drivers with it,Tiwari said. The company has a fleet of about 500 cars and an equal number of drivers in Mumbai. Meru Cabs,on the other hand, has a fleet of 2,000 cars and 1,700 drivers.
So far,we havent faced a situation like Meru in any city that we operate in because we have a proper structure for our drivers where we put them through training and have a proper system of communication with them, a spokesperson of Carzonrent, which owns the Easy Cab fleet, said. Some of the drivers are also on the company rolls.
Recently,Swabhimaan had called a strike for drivers of Meru Cabs. The first strike started on October 3 with a list of five demands of which the company accepted three. Two demands the company didnt accept were a cut in the daily fee a driver pays the company and at least three days leave for drivers per month. The strike lasted for nine days.
The company suffered a loss of more than Rs 3 crore during the strike. Some people also threw stones at Meru vehicles and forced passengers out.
