Union Sports Ministry to bear medical cost of maimed athlete

Ajay Maken had earlier announced a medical compensation of Rs 2 lakh for Arunima Sinha.

Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken on Monday promised to bear the medical expenses of injured national volleyball player Arunima Sinha,who lost her leg after being thrown out from a running train near Bareilly on April 11 and is presently undergoing treatment at Lucknow’s CSM Medical University.

Maken said he had asked ministry officials to ensure Sinha received Rs Rs. 2,00,000 for her treatment.

“I have asked the sports ministry officials to ensure that the Rs 2 lakh medical treatment,which we have promised earlier should reach her. I am going there with a team of doctors and we will see to it,if it is possible or if it is required,we will bring her to Delhi,” Maken told reporters.

Maken had earlier on April 14 announced a medical compensation of Rs. 2,00,000 for Arunima.

“If everything is going on fine there,then we will leave her in the hospital at Lucknow,but whatever treatment expenses would be for her,the sports ministry is going to bear,” he added ahead of his visit to Lucknow’s CSM medical university to meet Arunima.

Meanwhile,Uttar Pradesh Sports Minister Ayodhya Pal Singh,who met Arunima earlier this morning,offered a government job to her.

The 23-year-old lost her leg after being pushed from Padmavat Express near Bareilly on the night of April 11 while she was on her way to Gautam Buddha Nagar to appear in the CISF recruitment examination.

The police had lodged an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery).
