Unsafe Punjab govt school buildings to be demolished

All unsafe and dilapidated government school buildings in Punjab will be demolished and new ones will be constructed in their place. A order to this effect has been issued to all district education officers (DEOs) by the Director General School Education (DGSE), Punjab.

The orders state that buildings unsafe for children should be demolished soon and the DEOs can avail funds for the new buildings from the Sarav Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

According to the sources at the DGSE office, while there are around 1,200 unsafe and dilapidated government school buildings in the state, around 175 middle school, 100 high school and 18 Senior secondary schools are in a poor with the PWD department even declaring that they cannot be used any more. The sources added that most of the dilapidated buildings are located in districts like Sangrur, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Mansa and Bathinda.

Apart from this, there are around 400 such schools in the state which are being run from religious places like gurudwaras and temples as the education department has been unable to provide buildings to such schools.
