Unseasonal rains damage cotton, groundnut crops

  • Unseasonal rains in Junagadh district have heavily damaged the standing crops of cotton, groundnut, sugarcane and mango fruit farms.

    Heavy rains along with thunderstorm have uprooted thousands of mango trees in Talala and Vanthali taluka.

    The standing crops of cotton, sugarcane and groundnut which was ready to be harvested have been badly hit.

    Talala region in the district has received maximum damage.

    The crops in villages Jamwala, Shirwan, Modreka, Aankolwadi, Rasulpara, Hadmatiya, Surva, Modreka, Bamanasa and Rampara have received the maximum damage.

    “Not a single mango tree has survived in my six-acre farm located on the outskirts of Surva village. We have not had any food for last two days. The state government should provide us some relief or we will not survive,” said Madhubhai Patel, a farmer.

    “Seventy percent cotton cultivation is destroyed. Cotton pods and flowering are completely destroyed in rain,” said another farmer. “More or less, most farmers in the area have lost their season by untimely rains,” he said.

    The state agriculture department officials have started the survey of the damaged crops and the report will be ready in a day or two, said an official.
