UoP accused of overcharging students for attested photocopies of transcripts

One attested transcript photocopy for professional courses costs Rs 140, for non-professional courses, it is Rs 80.

The University of Pune (UoP) has received complaints from students who are accusing it of unnecessarily charging exorbitant fees for issuing attested photocopies of transcripts.

A transcript is a consolidated marksheet of a candidate's marks of all academic years and is a mandatory document to be sent along with an application form for securing admission to foreign universities.

The UoP currently charges as much as Rs 140 for issuing a single attested photocopy of a transcript for professional courses, while Rs 80 for that of non-professional courses. The students have to pay Rs 540 for professional courses at the rate of Rs 135 per year for a four-year course and Rs 315 for non-professional courses like BA, BCom and BSc to get a transcript.

"I was shocked to hear the fees charged for one attested photocopy of a transcript by the university. It is exorbitant. The process simply involves taking out a photocopy, getting it signed from the competent authority and putting in a sealed envelope. The university might be bearing an expenditure of maximum of Rs 20 on all these activities, but still they are charging extra money from students," said an engineering student from MIT.

When contacted, director of the Board of College and University Development (BCUD) of UoP, V B Gaikwad, the competent authority in the matter, said students' demand for bringing down the fees charged for attested photocopies of transcripts would be considered positively. "We will soon take stock of the situation and ensure that students get justice," he said.

The Certificate section of the University invariably receives, on an average, 100 applications for transcripts ahead of the admission season in foreign universities - from June to January every year. Most of these applicants are found to be of students of professional courses, especially that of engineering and management.
