UoP puts in place plan to improve industry placement

The Student Welfare Department (SWD) of the University of Pune (UoP) has come up with a plan to reduce demand-supply gap in industry placements of students by grooming them right at the start of college education.

SWD in collaboration with NGO Seasonal Group has tied up with nearly 1,500 companies in almost all sectors to facilitate easy placement of students.

The initiative also aims at training youth who have not attended college for industry jobs. "Although the project is in the initial stage, we plan to give some training to the literate youth who could not continue higher education. In any industry there are jobs such youth can do if trained well. The Seasonal Group has a project called Yuva Jagur and one of its aims is employment of such people," said SWD president Pandit Shelke.

"All companies need fresh recruits. But their constant worry is that students have knowledge from books but lack practical knowledge to work in a company. This is the gap we aim to fill," said Shelke.

"From the next academic year onwards, various companies will train students one day every week or as per their convenience. This will go on for three years for students beginning from their first year. After that, the companies will recruit," Shelke added.

A workshop for students was held on November 10 in which students were informed about the scheme and feedback was taken from them. "We have already sent a circular regarding this and once colleges reopen after the Diwali break, we will speed up the awareness programme and eventually chalk out the enrollment process," Shelke said. "Once everything is finalised, an online portal will be started in the university website to make enrollment easier," Shelke added.

Among the 1,500 companies are some big names including IT giants like TCS, Accenture and Infosys besides almost all mechanical, IT and electronics companies in MIDCs of Bhosari and Hinjewadi. "Although nothing has been finalised, there will be training centres designated in Nashik, Pune and Ahmednagar for students of those areas," said Shelke.
