UP secretary has apologised to the Supreme Court over the statues issue.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary has tendered an unconditional apology to the Supreme Court for allegedly violating its order and undertaking given by him to stop the construction work for memorials and statues of Dalit leaders including that of Chief Minister Mayawati in Lucknow.

In an affidavit, Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta said he was tendering an unqualified apology if there was any kind of disobedience or deviation in complying with the court directions.

The apex court had on October 6 initiated contempt proceedings against the Chief Secretary for allegedly violating the court order and had asked him to personally appear in court on November four.

The contempt proceedings have been initiated on the ground that the September 8 undertaking given by the Chief Secretary and September 11 order of the apex court on stoppage of construction activities at the sites have been flouted.

The court had rebuked the state government asking it not to play politics with it and said instructions from the "highest level" seems to have come to defy its orders.

A PIL filed in the apex court had challenged the construction of memorials and installation of statues on the ground that around Rs.2,600 crore of public money was used for the project.

Maya's statuesBy: varind | 12-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward UP Chief Secretary's apology in SC is nothing but a farce. He is doing so as per the orders of his masters. Bureaucrats are mere pawns in the hands of politicians and so long the system is not changed such events will keep on taking place. Will the apology bring back sqaundering of public money back?
Sack CS GuptaBy: Hero Vaz | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Chief Secretary Gupta should be sacked for blatant disobedience of the Supreme Court's order. The apology should not be accepted.
MsBy: Ema Fernandes | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It is similar to many old stories. If one fails to give IT return, pay fine, face penalties. Government delays to return citizen´s fund, maximum an apology is tendered. Therefore skin burning, throat squeezing punishments to a normal citizen is equivalent to a simple apology by government personnel. Now question, what is Government? Is it just a body without head or made of human being with accountability. Then why this diparity? Probably answers lie with no one and always some one becoming Naxal. Come on Supreme court with Supreme authority - SAVE THE COUNTRY AND ITS TRUE DEMOCRACY.
